Oxford University's Faculty of Music welcomes instrumentalists from all corners of the world as it launches a 4-day Theremin Academy. The Faculty has been hosting workshops for several years, but now Andrew Lamb (director of host venue the Bate Collection) has allowed the programme to expand in scope. Its selection of classes, sessions and rehearsals is for the experienced player, and these active participants are expected to bring their own equipment.
However, this is a unique programme within the UK - renowned thereminist and Oxford resident Lydia Kavina will be giving lessons and workshops, and Thierry Frenkel will not only be teaching and performing, but in his other guise as 'electronic luthier' will offer advice on maintenance of these unique instruments, and repairs and modifications for an extra fee. The public is invited to hear Kavina and Frenkel in concert, and active participants will be working towards a private concert too. So serious amateur players will be able to get the best out of their technique, and social events such as a guided 'Oxford by Night' tour allow links to be built across the theremin community.
