A Million Memories is the raw but poignant story of a mother with young-onset dementia and her daughter told through dance, music and poetry.
Dementia is a terrible, isolating condition that can cruelly rip people away from loved ones and from themselves, but if we learn to adapt our communication and learn how to keep our connection with the people suffering from it, we can still reach the other, no matter how fleeting the moment. In that message, there is hope for those learning to cope with dementia. This interactive performative experience will take the audience on a journey, from discovering how the piece was made and the messages it portrays while sharing a personal view of the dementia journey from people who have a personal experience of the disease.
After the event, there will be a Q&A session with artists and dementia experts, including Professor Chris Kennard, who specialises in clinical neurology and is part of the team based at the Cognitive Disorders clinic at the John Radcliffe Hospital.
This event is for the Dancin' Oxford Dance Festival 2019 and Brain Awareness Week 2019, and is supported with funding from the Oxford City Council.
