Fake news, nuclear threats and fear. Peace-time in 2019 or the Cold War of 1952?Hosted by the Museum of Oxford’s Youth Panel, step back in time and visit Oxford during the Cold War to see just how much of our lives today are echoes of the past. Featuring a Cold War escape room. Young people particularly welcome.
Oxford Town Hall, St Aldate's, Oxford OX1 1DP, Thu 17 October 2019
For the 40 year duration of the Cold War, fear that the showdown between East and West could very easily escalate permeated life and the risk of a nuclear disaster was the permanent backdrop to people’s lives.
Disinformation, propaganda and the potential for misunderstanding characterised the period. Do they have echoes in today’s fake news and alternative facts? Meanwhile, mistrust of government fuelled demonstrations and movements such as the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, along with a nascent environmentalism which today continues to inspire protest.
The Museum of Oxford invite you to re-enter this era and explore its parallels with today. You can listen to the experiences of Oxford residents through oral history recordings, and brush up on your Cyrillic. Or make your own Cold War-inspired fake news and protest posters. Don’t forget to take your turn in the Escape Room set up in the Micro-Museum. Will you start a nuclear conflict? Afterwards, you can relax with a themed cocktail. (Advanced booking is full for the Escape Room, but it's likely there'll be free slots on the night.)
The Youth Panel is made up of 16-30 year olds with an interest in events planning, marketing and museums. This is their debut event. If you want to be involved in putting on the next Youth Panel event email the musem ([email protected]) for further details.
