Award season always brings a host of also-rans; brilliant films that don't catch on with the bodies dolling out nominations. Joining the likes of The Farewell, Hustlers and The Souvenir (troublingly, all those overlooked have been directed by women - a wider conversation that cinema is currently grappling with) comes Queen & Slim. Directed by Melina Matsoukas (who has made her name directing some of the very best music videos of the last decade) and written by Lena Waithe (whose TV work includes Master of None and The Chi), it tells the story of a first date that escalates into a cross-country chase, when a couple are pulled over by a police officer.

Exploring issues of race in America, Queen & Slim promises to be a potent watch. The cast are led by the always-brilliant Daniel Kaluuya and the indie talent Jodie Turner-Smith, with the rest of the ensemble is made up by the likes of Bokeem Woodbine, Chloë Sevigny, Indya Moore and Red Hot Chilli Peppers' Flea. Cinematography comes from Tat Radcliffe (previous work includes '71, Pride and Top Boy) with Pete Beaudreau (Margin Call, All Is Lost, Beasts of No Nation) editing the film.

It can be easy to miss films during the wave of award-contenders but Queen & Slim feels like one worth seeking out.
