Music, food, big bright carnival procession on the theme of Icons of Art, world music, street art, and bubbles galore. It's Oxford's great big day out!
Cowley Road, Sun 1 July 2018
It's Carnival time again, and 50,000 carnival-goers are expected! Events will fill Cowley Road from The Plain to Magdalen Rd. Music stages will pop up everywhere! Expect that strange clash as nearby stages play different styles of music at you.
A giant Headington shark and a custom-designed Mini will appear in the Carnival parade alongside musicians, dancers, school and community groups. The theme is 'Icons of Art': expect cool costumes and homages to great artists. Starting at 12.30pm at The Plain, the procession will shimmy up to Manzil Way.
Different areas will celebrate science, global dance, art, street theatre, and all things Caribbean, and will include the Oxford Brookes Zone, Dingley Dell for families, and The Old Curiosity Shop for carnival-goers craving a little quiet. Try goat curry for lunch, nasi kuning for tea, and Brazilian bolitas and ice cream for supper!
Expect impromptu street theatre, market stalls, and something to see at every turn. (Maps available on the day.) You'll bump into hundreds of people you know, and see your local area transformed into a land full of surprises. It's free though visitors are invited to pay £1.
NB Drivers/bus passengers: Cowley Road and most side roads will be closed 8am-7pm. Buses will divert down Iffley Rd. Parking will be difficult, so do come by foot/bike/bus if you can.
