Oxford Pint Shop's ethos of good ale and hearty food is inspired by the beer houses which proliferated in the 1830s after the Beer Act was passed in an effort to reduce the damaging effects of gin on Georgian society. Then consumed in eye-watering volume by the nations poorest, gin was blamed for all manner of social evils including parental neglect, mounting debt levels and a falling birth rate. But the drink once known as mother's ruin has come a long way since those days, and you can now quench your thirst for strong liquor and historical knowledge in this intriguing tasting, which explores gin's fascinating history from its early production as a medicinal tonic in the Netherlands, through its less salubrious period as a popular quick route to oblivion, to its reinvention and celebration as a complex, interesting and delicious tipple. There will be 5 different gins for sampling and discussion, and Pint Shop's resident gin expert will be leading the tasting.
