Brightwell-cum-Sotwell describes itself as an Orchard Village, and its Apple Day as "the Best in Oxfordshire". While we at DI are of course strictly impartial, it is tempting to agree, not least because of Paul Chilton's giant display of heritage apple varieties. He's promising over 80 varities, and they're all harvested from the parish of Brightwell-cum-Sotwell. Not surprisingly Paul can help identify your mystery apple varieties.
Visitors are invited to taste the apples, admire the differences, and taste the juice fresh from the press. That's a whole world of appl-i-ness, and totally different from supermarket juice. You might also want to admire the picturesque and evocative names, and enjoy the language on your tongue as well as the juice.
Other fruits from the village will be celebrated in the form of cakes, jams and chutneys. There are also kids' activities, and everything is happening outside the Red Lion, which will be serving a full Sunday lunch. Booking is recommended if you're hoping to eat anything other than apples!
