'Creative Multilingualism' is an unbelievably rich research programme, viewing the overwhelmingly polyglot population we have in the UK as a resource that can revitalise creativity, and a cause to rethink how we do language education. For these researchers, language is an ever-changing carrier of identity and means of self-expression - much as it is for the three Birmingham-based creatives featured in this exhibition.

RTKal is a rapper and spoken word artist who's been on the go since the age of 12, subsequently working with Don Letts and touring with GZA. With dexterity and speed he rhymes about life amid the cultures of East London/Jamaica/Digbeth and stardom/church/wreathes of joint-smoke. RTKal acted in grime theatre show 8sixteen 32, and has long been active in subverting the aggression still associated with grime. Nigerian percussionist Lekan Babalola's drum rig comprises elements from everywhere in the world, as does his musical inspiration - a filmmaker and curator as well as an exploratory bandleader, he's also worked on a translation of Ifa verses (the text of his belief system) into performance poetry. Finally, the comedy and theatre of Rinkoo Barpaga sheds light on the unique communicative approaches, challenges and sheer breadth of the deaf community, and his work in the exhibition focuses on urban sign language.
