Something of an annual tradition, Cult Screens arrives in Oxford this year with a hit-filled line-up. On the one had you've got the cult horror
The Lost Boys (all 80s mullets and vampire silliness). And then on the other is a film like the heart-breaking animation
Coco (with a profoundly moving final third). The selection seems to have curated the right mix of modern hits such as
The Greatest Showman and
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, with the kind of films that are a mainstay at open-air cinemas across the country, such
Jaws,
Top Gun and
Dirty Dancing. There are some inspired choices too with The Old Prison Exercise Yard in the Oxford Castle Quarter playing host to two of the best prison-centric films (
The Shawshank Redemption and
Paddington 2).
Cult Screens takes place in the Oxford Castle Quarter in May and September and outside the Natural History and Pitt Rivers Museum in August. At the Oxford Castle there is the option of a deckchair or beanbag, while outside the museum the choice expands to include double beanbags as well as general entry.
A few ground rules worth noting about the screenings are that no under 5s are allowed at events, the screening will go ahead come rain or shine, and while there are supplies available to buy on-site, you can bring your own food and drink.
