Help celebrate Westmill's 10th birthday of community-owned renewable power, with live music, food, a giant kite show, bouncy castle, a treasure trail, and more, including site tours and a look inside an 81 metre turbine!
Westmill Wind Farm, B4508, Watchfield, Swindon SN6 8TH, Sat 16 June 2018
Let's get excited about a big birthday party with giant kites! Celebrating 10 years of power production from Oxfordshire’s only wind farm, this is a family fun day with food, live music, children’s activities and an opportunity to get inside one of the five 81m high wind turbines.
Over ten years Westmill has generated equivalent clean power for over 2,600 homes. It saves 5,200 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year, and generates around £1 million income each year. Westmill Wind Farm is owned by a co-operative (with over 2000 members) and sells its electricity to Coop Energy. It has become an accepted and popular part of the local landscape.
The day's programme includes: a giant kite display by the White Horse Kite Fliers against a backdrop of the five big turbines, live music, children’s activities including a treasure hunt, a solar fountain and a bouncy castle. There will be DIY pizzas and a bar serving local beers.
There will also be a guided cycle ride on a countryside route organised by Oxford group Cyclox (see notes). Camping will be allowed on the site on Saturday night for those who wish to break their cycle ride and relax. Westmill Natural Burial Ground (adjacent to the site) will be also open 2-5pm for visitors to look round and will have wildlife walks and bird box making.
