'Laughter is the best medicine', so the saying goes - and it may surprise you to learn that there is scientific evidence for the truth of this adage! A range of benefits, from endorphin release to stronger relationships, have been linked to higher rates of chortling. Laughter Club takes this insight further, providing guided exercises and yoga-inspired deep breathing, designed to get you chuckling on demand.
The monthly sessions are run by Janet and Wyon Stansfeld, two stalwarts of the Oxford community who have extensive experience in counselling and therapy in various forms. True to their background of working with disadvantaged people, there are reduced fees on offer for those who need them, making this a truly accessible event.
The classes work on the principle of 'fake it 'til you make it', whereby deliberate attempts to laugh soon naturally evolve into the entire room erupting in genuine, spontaneous guffaws, ensuring participants leave cheerful, even if they started the session in a bad mood. Anyone of any age can attend, particularly as there is no physical yoga involved, so the strenuous stretches are replaced by flexes of your funny bones. So why not check out a class where it's ok - indeed, very much encouraged - to get the giggles?
