The Uncomfortable Oxford Walking Tour

Walk through Oxford's streets, learning about various aspects of its 'uncomfortable' past. The tour is part of a project aimed at public outreach and encouraging discussion about historical topics which are often uncomfortable to confront yet still have a lasting legacy in the modern environment of the city and University of Oxford. Topics covered include imperialism, inequality, slavery, gender history, religious diversity, violence, and memorialisation. Meet outside Carfax Tower.

The Uncomfortable Oxford Project, a local initiative set up by two Oxford students which runs outreach programmes, lectures and blogs about the problematic side of Oxford's history, is running The Uncomfortable Oxford Walking Tour. This tour looks at how Oxford's place as a powerful city and a leading academic institution is linked to a lot of uncomfortable history, such as imperialism, racism, sexism, classism, slavery and violence.

The tour intends to raise questions and encourage discussion about uncomfortable historical topics and their impact on Oxford in the past and present. Beginning at Carfax Tower, you'll get to visit some of Oxford's most famous historical monuments. There is no fixed price for the tour, but donations are welcome.
