Oxford Early Music Festival 2019

Charivari Agréable's annual summer festival — over twenty intimate candlelit concerts.
From a previous year of the Festival, at the Sheldonian Theatre
Exeter College Chapel, Exeter College, Turl Street, Oxford OX1 3DP, Tue 9 July - Sun 18 August 2019

Join Charivari Agréable for a series of over 20 intimate concerts by candlelight. This year sees a focus on the firey queens of the period, in addition to concerts inspired by the secret singing of Recusants and Latin puns about fiddles and faith. Curated by Kah-Ming Ng, expect music spanning epochs from the Renaissance to the early classical period.

Highlights include 'The Game of Queens', a concert which marks the 500th anniverary of the birth of Catherine de Medici and explores her tumultuous life with passionate pieces from Dowland, Guedron and Strozzi among others, plus readings from contemporary correspondence and the sonnets and speeches of Shakespeare. 'Queen Anne's Solace' will be a more stately affair, focusing on the chamber music of Stuart England. It's inspired by the two Queen Annes that bookended the dynasty, both of whom were generous patrons of the arts despite facing debilitating illnesses.
