KAMA Oxford Workshops

Workshops on Arabic, Crochet, Cooking and loads more topics run by asylum seekers, refugees, and other migrants.
Usually in the Makerspace (to your left just before the piano), Oxfordshire County Library, Westgate Shopping Centre, Queen Street, Oxford OX1 1DJ; at regular intervals

KAMA Oxford are a great organisation, helping refugees, asylumn seekers and other migrants to run classes for the general public. As they point out, migration (and especially forced migration) has been demonised, and these classes are a great way to show the rich culture migration has brought to the UK over the years. But even more than that, the classes show individuals with plenty of skills and enthusiasm to share; with lots to offer as well as things they need. And being able to picture a real living breathing person is a brilliant way to break down prejudice against a group.

KAMA partners potential teachers with a teacher mentor, who might help by translating or setting up a venue, and who allows the teacher to shine. The crochet teacher, Souad, ran a series of classes in spring 2019 and has come back for more in 2020. Her previous pupils noted her enthusiasm and expertise. Classes are free, and take place in the cosy Makerspace at Oxford County Library (in the Westgate).

Watch out for talks by Eritrean refugees, classes on Arabic calligraphy, guitar and Mandarin folksong, and plenty of cookery demonstrations. KAMA Oxford is based on a model from Austria, and many Austrian cities have a local KAMA branch.
