LGBT+ History Month 2020

This year's series of events celebrating and commemorating progress for Oxford's LGBTIQA+ communities
Various venues, Sat 1st - Sat 29th February 2020

Oxford has a long-held tradition of inclusivity for people who identify as LGBTIQA+, matched currently by a thriving social scene, for students and non-students alike. This progress has been achieved through years of struggle, locally and nationwide, against hostile forces and homophobic institutions - LGBT+ History Month is intended to reflect on how far we as a society have come and how far we have to go, and to celebrate and commemorate the contributions of LGBTIQA+ people to progress in many fields. Examining history through the lens of queer perspectives also involves questioning the narratives that have traditionally been upheld about better-known stories, to ensure that LGBTIQA+ people involved are not overlooked.

Academic groups, charities and artists in Oxford offer a diverse range of events, exploring these issues in the form of performances, film screenings, discussions and presentations, covering everything from personal relationships to scientific discoveries. Keep an eye out for the rainbow flag, which most of the colleges fly, displaying their solidarity and brightening up the wintry month. All are invited - whether you identify as LGBTIQA+ or as an ally - to learn something new and be inspired to continue to strive for equality.
