I’ve just seen the funniest most heart-warming Christmas show and I really want everyone else to see it! It’s called SUPERMARKET SCROOGE at Pegasus Theatre Oxford, and it’s a hilarious update on Dickens’ A Christmas Carol by the legendary Emma Boor and seamlessly produced and directed by Euton Daley. The cast, consisting of Kerry Angus, Krage Brown, Amantha Edmead and Emma herself, are amazing and draw the audience in with their high energy warmth and tip-top professionalism.
From the very first moment, when the lights went down, we were welcomed as seasonal staff to Scroogeways Supermarket circa the 90s, and were involved in helping the story along with songs, actions, games and the occasional bottom wiggle in an effort to ‘change Wilhelmena Scrooge’ before it’s too late.
The ghosts of the past, present and future turn out to be visitations by ‘bargain products’ from different aisles of the supermarket. Christmas Past-its sell-by date is a brussels sprout, Christmas Present is a flashily wrapped gift with very big teeth, and Christmas Future, involving a frozen turkey and a boyband in white puffa jackets, had the audience dissolving into tears of laughter.
Every detail of this show is absolutely pitch perfect down to fantastic sound, lighting and stage design, and even the programme, which, as well as giving details about the show, has pages for children to colour in or work out activities with some of the puppet characters.
Enthusiastic comments from mums and dads included “It’s the best Christmas show I’ve ever seen!” and “Refreshingly silly”, while the children loved the fun, songs and interactivity especially, said one, “The ‘pea in the trolley’ game”, which involved the cast and audience batting giant green balloons around the auditorium.
Supermarket Scrooge is on until Wednesday 24 December and the tickets are flying off the shelf.
