Powell and Pressburger would have been mighty impressed. It's a solid piece of British entertainment, with good performances from the cast. My 83-year-old mum loved it. For me it can get a wee bit twee and Notting Hill-y at times but, it would be churlish of me not to admit I had a good laugh. Bill Nighy is as good as ever, with just a raised eyebrow here and there, turning drama into comedy. The storyline is pretty good. You do get the feeling that people were just coping with the constant blitz in London, and that death could happen when least expected. But there's also some very poignant lines re. class, gender and morals that are cleverly updated from those times to the present day.
