Lee Chang-Dong directs sporadically and brilliantly. Eight years after his award-winning feature Poetry, the director returns with the Cannes Film Festival hit Burning. Equal parts noir mystery, beguiling romance and deconstruction of modern masculinity, the film follows Lee Jong-su, whose reunion with Shin Hae-mi is thrown off-kilter by the arrival of the Ben, a mysterious figure with a very odd pastime.

Burning may frustrate viewers but it does, once again, prove Steven Yeun, who plays the film's antagonist, is a major acting talent. Having managed to escape The Walking Dead right before rigor mortis set in, Yeun follows terrific work in Okja and Sorry To Bother You with a turn that proves to be the terrifying centre of Chang-Dong's film.
