Following on from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the comedic sextet took on an even bigger target: the Bible and, in particular, Jesus Christ. And in the process they produced one of the great comedy films, Life of Brian. Telling the tale of Brian, and his hysterical peers who mistake him for a Messiah, the film has overcome the controversy of its time to become a firm staple of British culture, with a script packed with wonderfully quotable dialogue. It is safe to say that the group never quite matched the film's level of comedic brilliance. But their legacy was set by this fiercly ambitious, bonkers romp which is well worth revisiting, especially on its 30th birthday. All together now: "he's not the Messiah…"
