Following on from the documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbour?, A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood looks at the enduring appeal of American children’s TV personality Mr. Rogers, focusing in on his encounter with the journalist who was profiling him. And who else are you going to get to play such a beloved figure but Tom Hanks, whose own standing is close to iconic? Hanks' performance has netted him his first Oscar nomination in nineteen years (the last was for Cast Away) and his first BAFTA nom in six (since Captain Phillips).

There are other elements to recommend this film to audiences. Director Marielle Heller is coming off of Can You Ever Forgive Me?, one of the best films of last year, whilst the cast includes The Americans’ Matthew Rhys, This Is Us’ Susan Kelechi Watson and fellow Oscar-winner Chris Cooper. All together A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood should offer audiences a charming look at one of the nicer parts of American culture.
