First the good news: Ryan Gosling is clearly a star in the making and this film really did him a lot of favours. Its a well made, beautiful looking court room thriller, set in LA, with wife murderer and cuckolded husband Anthony Hopkins doing his best to upset Gosling's impeccable career as a DA and throw a spanner in the works of his new job by creating the perfect crime.
Hopkins is, as usual, great; his presence in any kind of film must add a few noughts to the takings; its just a shame that in this case, he was clearly cast to reprise his Lecterness....the standoffs and mindgames between the two leads were an echo of Silence of the Lambs scenes, which is the bad news.
However, it's still a very enjoyable movie, bit slow perhaps in places but you won't go wrong seeing this, if you can bear going into a cinema while the weather is so good.
