Georgia Groome is a star in the making. And Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging is worth a watch because of her.
Riffing like a teenage Bridget Jones on female insecurities, this is a wishfulfilment movie if ever there was one. A perfectly safe and sappy entertainment, it's full of the pitfalls and pratfalls of girlhood.
Groome plays a teen desperate to woo the boy of her dreams; but dressing up as a stuffed olive at a party only sets the bar for a series of squirmy embarrassments.
Lightly gross-out (the kissing lesson is particularly groo-some), Angus, Thongs tries a bit too hard to be likeable but there are some amusingly quirky moments (Angus the cat being dressed up by Groome's baby sister).
Worries about her mum's flirtations with a hunky handyman blend with anxieties about parental divorce - rivalling Groome's worries about kissing technique. But nothing quite prepares us for the pink-with-ribbons ending in which every strand comes together...with extra sugar on top.
Georgia Groome is a consummate comedienne - rivalling Sandra Bullock's and Renee Zellweger's ability to play the fool and still look sweet. And what a range this girl has: Angus, Thongs is lightyears from Groome's harrowing performance in Brit-thriller London to Brighton.
She's one to watch. And so - if you're a girly girl aged 10-16 - is Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging.
