An Absolute little Gem of a film. "Dean Spanley" completely defies categorisation but manages both at once to be utterly beguiling and touching in the extreme.
The difficult relationship between father and son is ably elaborated upon with a stellar performance by Peter O'Toole as an old man ( Fisk Senior) with very few charms.
Enter Dean Spanley ( played admirably by Sam Neill) a man with a strong penchant and weakness for Imperial Tokay who through olfactory stimulation regresses back to being Fisk Senior's beloved childhood dog, engendering a considerable thawing of said curmudgeon towards his much put upon son.
The nature of grieving is explored in a subtle but touching manner and the movie sparkles with fantastic dialogues and a witty script. The entire cast gives stunning performances, and it looks absolutely ravishing.
A magical and surprising feel-good movie which should put a little warmth into the most hardened of hearts.
Charming, quirky and an utter delight from beginning to end and the perfect proof that films may yet enchant and take us completely by surprise.
For those of you who need a little sprinkling of Christmas magic dust, this is just the ticket...
Do not miss. Movies like those do not come around very often.
It almost made me wish I believed in the transmigration of souls...
