Have to agree with Moviemoghul here, this is not one of Woody's best. It's essentially an updated version of A Streetcar Named Desire, but without brilliant script or the human interest. It is a barnstorming performance from Cate Blanchett, but to what end? When she first appears, you think, Christ what an awful woman, is she in fact slightly bonkers? And the rest of the film confirms that she is (spoiler alert) indeed utterly despicable and very much the author of her own misfortunes, as well as someone you would not want to be sat next to on a long-haul flight.
What particularly engaged my attention (and not in a good way) is how all female characters are presented as ultimately lying cheating manipulative b****es, even the sister, Ginger, who initially seemed a warm sympathetic character. The performances of these supporting roles though are just superb - watch out for Sally Hawkins who played Ginger, and Bobby Canavale who played her boyfriend Chili - they actually do make it worth the ticket price. But otherwise it feels deeply misogynistic and leaves a bad taste.
