A pub/bar/eatery hang out zone on the Cowley Road on the site of the old Elm Tree pub. Has a welcoming ethos and want to be doing something a bit different from your regular pub or bar, opening itself out to being used by local people; there is a space for pop-up shops on Saturdays, they are planning to have pingpong tournaments, groovy quizzes, live gigs, and different local DJ's on Fridays and Saturday nights, when they are open until 2am.

Then the Swan, Irish to the hilt & then some (especially when it comes to the jukebox & the decor - hurling & horseracing posters), is for you. Opposite the Crown House, east Oxford's Irish social club (see Shamrock bar, below), the Swan is not for the faint-hearted - but once adopted by the publicans, you'll find it warm and friendly. Potted palms and split-level site make for interest, and the whole space seems open and spacious. The menu is straightforward but things like fruit juices are more natural without artificial ingredients; it's not awash with sugary carbonated tooth-rotting drinks, and is therefore kind for families.
