New contender in the Oxford burger wars
A new challenger has entered the crowded ring of Oxford burger providers, with Glut landing in George Street, bringing with it hefty burgers and an appreciation of all things American. As Daily Info's resident burger lover I was eager to head on down and try out this new contender.
Glut benefits greatly from a cool vibe, aided by well chosen music and some fabulous art on the wall. This matched by a menu that is refreshingly simple, promising a meal that would be right up my street. The staff are exceptionally welcoming and we ordered a round of burgers, plus a shredded chicken crockpot. The menu feels affordable, with free refills and a nice range of vegan and vegetarian burgers.
It is a shame then that when our food arrived it couldn't quite live up to the initial promise. An overabundance of their 'burger spread' undoes the meal, causing the bottom of the bun to be very soggy. The rest of the burger's contents is fine if rather unexceptional, with the bun proving rather distracting. You want the burgers at a restaurant called Glut to be positively decadent, and they sadly underwhelm. The crockpot was flavoursome but is probably closer to a side or a starter, which feels like an opportunity missed. It was also noticeable that, once our mains had arrived, the speed of service slowed down, preventing us from trying out the desserts due to a prior engagement.
The frustration I had with Glut is that what it offers isn't enough to distinguish itself, even though there are some glimmers that suggest it could get better. Had we not run out of time I would have love to have tried the Oreo filled pancakes, a mash-up of two of my favourite things. And the sinful fries are mostly a decedent delight, perfectly adding to exemplary fries in general. There are strengths amongst this menu but Glut has teething problems.
I really wanted to love Glut; one of my great joys is finding a new burger that can match up to some of the very best examples in Oxford, which unfortunately isn't something that Glut achieves. There is potential here, especially given that Glut successfully fosters a fun, welcoming atmosphere. It may even be worth a second visit just to try the fabulous sounding pancakes, but for now, my search for a great burger continues.
