Donating Goods
Not only is this a new and evolving situation, but also a huge wave of early donations means that the current needs are changing fast. We recommend the most up to date information comes direct from incredibly busy and speedy local organisers, the Oxford University Ukrainian Society, whose twitter feed contains the latest. Try not to tag them or message them unnecessarily - communications overwhelm is one of the problems of central organisation hubs at this point.
Donating Money
There are no shortage of funds to accept monetary donations. Unicef, Crisis Relief, Red Cross, Disasters Emergency Committee, if you have a favoured one among these do send money that way. To donate direct to a Ukrainian-based charity how about Voices of Children, already helping children in the east of the country recover from the invasions from previous years. Sunflower of Peace (sunflower's being the national flower) is based in Boston USA and provides first aid backpacks for the front lines. United Help Ukraine is providing medical supplies and aid, and raising awareness.
There are also smaller more specialised charities and individuals helping to send army supplies for all the untrained, ill-equipped troops of ordinary people suddenly catapulted into battle, or providing mobile phones and coordinating safe routes out, especially for Africans in Ukrained who are facing racism on top of the struggles to flee that affect everyone. Again scouring social media is the best way to find these. Olia Hercules (Ukrainian chef and food writer) is very active and provides a running account of her family in Ukraine as a personal perspective as well as suggestions of what is needed and how to get it there.
There are a lot of people desperate to do something, and offering prints, pottery and other artistic items on instagram. Search #printmakersagainstwar as a first step. Either the artist donates their payment to charity or you donate to charity instead of paying the artist. It's a nice way to encourage lots of small donations (which add up especially while the UK government is matching donations pound for pound) but also to show support and foster a sense of community united against the war no matter how geographically scattered.
Protests and Rallies
It's a running theme, but social media is the means to organise things quickly. Check Oxford University Ukrainian Society's twitter feed as a first port of call.
Other ways to help
Here is the current petition to waive visa requirements for Ukrainians fleeing war. Do also pester your MP to lobby the government to strengthen sanctions against Russia. Some countries are now impounding the property of Russian expat oligarchs, or sanctioning individuals who support Putin.
