Saw III is the latest example of ordeal cinema. Like its predecessors, and last year's Hostel, the point - like a sickening theme-park ride - is not so much to be entertained as to see if you can take it. What's surprising is that 'torture porn' has become such a mainstream attraction, with this film topping the US and UK charts by huge margins on its opening weekend. The film is staged with demented brio, but it's troubling that so many of us (and I'm no less guilty) can sit with wincing camaraderie through scences of terrible human suffering. If these were animals being tortured, I'm sure the great majority of the audience would leave in disgust - but somehow it's different with our fellow species. By far the scariest thing about Saw III is us.
