'A Man For All Seasons' is a challenge for any group of actors, professional or amateur. However, The Old Gaol Theatre Company put on a fine performance. The simple set and effective use of lighting added to the enjoyment. I would have liked to have seen more variation in Paul Barrand's voice and expressions as Sir Thomas. At times there was not enough 'light and shade' in his performance. However, overall he made a very good job of the huge role and looked the part.
The supporting cast was very good, particularly Jon Crowley as Norfolk and Kevin Middleton as Cromwell. Sarah Jones as Alice was far too quiet at times - even with my good hearing! I also found her performance flat - apart from in the most difficult scene, when saying goodbye to Thomas in prison, when she was surprisingly good. David Spencer was excellent as The Common Man - what wonderful comic timing. Well done to all involved; the hard work paid off.
