The Studio Theatre Club's interpretation of the Bard's popular play, directed by the very talented Stephen Briggs, is thoroughly enjoyable. The Unicorn Theatre's unique space is used very effectively with a vivacious mix of song, dance, special effects and even some magic tricks!
The costumes are remarkable, ranging from the traditional to steampunk via public school boy. Unsurprisingly, The "play within the play" resulted in the most laughs of the evening with a particularly hilarious performances from Matt Kirk as Bottom, ably supported by the other mechanicals. However, there were many other comic moments with Sreya Rao's Irish accented mimicking of Brian Macken being one of the highlights.
I would recommend this production of The Dream very highly. The vivacious and committed performances cannot fail to lighten the spirits. Thanks to the very clear diction and enunciation of almost all the performers along with the intimate space of the Unicorn theatre, this production will appeal to even the most hardened Shakespeare-phobe. And there's even a very well executed Bollywood moment at the end!
