The second display at the 03 Gallery by Eight Cuts, Once Upon A Time In A Gallery explores the traditional and twisted side of classic fairytales. Conditioned to believe in these stories from a young age, the artists featured here question what they really mean. The exhibition explores the darker side of their meanings and ‘invites the audience to reflect on this rootlessness, and whether, when they find themselves lost in today’s dark forest, there is any gingerbread trail to lead them to safety’.
The exhibition launch evening on Thursday 27th January 2011 showcased readings from several of the artists featured in this exhibition. In particular I enjoyed Peter Brooks’ reading from his first novel, ‘The Alchemy Of Chance’, and the RAD Cam! Exhibition by Emma Dougherty, inspired by her fascination of Oxford’s Radcliffe Camera, which formed the backdrop to the launch evening.
Featuring over 20 international artists, from the ‘satanist and schizophrenic’ Cody James to the burlesque ‘smut peddler’ from Brooklyn, Shannon Moran, and author Marija Fekete-Sullivan who flew from Sarajevo to perform a reading from her book ‘The Mermaid’s Dream’, the exhibition features various interpretations of fairytale meanings and their hidden meanings – Moran asks ‘What if little Red Riding Hood went with the big bad wolf? What if she gave her self completely to all of the things she feared most?’ These notions may be uncomfortable for some, but a liberation to others – such is the beauty and horror of art and interpretation.
The full exhibition runs at the 03 Gallery, Oxford Castle, for 2 months from Tuesday 1st February 2011. The RAD Cam! Exhibition is currently running until Sunday 13th February 2011. For more information, visit:
