Thoroughly competent, enjoyable big-budget action movie. Possibly not as good as the excellent third MI3 film, which benefited enormously from the softening of the Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) character via the presence of his wife, thus proving he had a life other than watching videos that self destruct in 5 seconds. So this time, Hunt is battling mad Russians who want to blow up the world, instead of nasty types who sell secrets to nasty Russians. The action spans several continents; the level of suspense is still high; and the vertiginous exploits of Cruise in climbing the outside of buildings only equipped with a dodgy Spiderman hand was very sweat-hands inducing. Simon Pegg's presence may have taken away from the tension, as his comedic touch lessens the peril. Jeremy Renner and Paula Patton are the other members of his team - one did wonder why the existing members from MI3 weren't asked to rejoin the film, and with only a token appearance by Ving Rhames, that was a bit sad, but overall, film ticks the boxes for a good night out.
