"I'm not going straight to hell. I'm stopping by at New York first" - Ethan Wate.
I feel as if this movie is an easy target for criticism but, when watched before reading any negative reviews, it captures the magic of the charming love affair between a 'Caster' and a mortal along with the mysteriousness of the South.
As the trailers started to appear on TV more and more frequently I became increasingly eager to see it but after reading the reviews I was incredibly disheartened and actually ended up seeing it a few months after it came out.
However, despite the terrible reviews that it received claiming that the actors had "outrageously awful Southern accents", I really really loved this film.
Admittedly, the story-line is rather predictable and the ending seems to leave the audience slightly disheartened but the realistic love between the two main characters Ethan and Lena (Alden Ehrenreich and Alice Englert) makes it totally believable and intriguing. I honestly did want to make it to the end and I am hoping that the bad press that surrounds the movie won't stop the sequel, Beautiful Darkness, from being produced.
Comparing Beautiful Creatures to Twilight would be unfair as the lead boy Ethan Wate surely is no Edward Cullen.
Emma Thompson's strong Southern accent has been criticized for being over-acted and unrealistic yet I feel that her portrayal of traditional woman who is terrified of those that are 'against God' such as Lena and the Casters was decent although not her best performance by any means. Overall, the acting was good and the costumes were truly beautiful (Ridley's black lace dress with the high neck and cut out gave me some serious wardrobe envy).
I recommend this film for teenage girls that are fans of Twilight and The Hunger Games. If you do not fit that niche you may struggle to stay awake because the plot is very much focused on a Romeo-and-Juliet-style love affair that can become dull when it is overused in so many teen movies.
