Shame that this time last year (2007) there was some great live music but recently the music has gone downhill when it is on.

Having undergone another refit relatively recently (it has got over its fishing-tack-hanging-from-the-ceiling phase) the Standard is a doing what it is good at - being a street corner pub. It serves a decent enough meal for the money, good selection of beers and wine. They have Belhaven Best Bitter on draft: not the best beer in the world but a rare sight this far south that makes a nice change.

Depite its rather forbidding looks from the outside, The Standard is actually a pretty good pub. There is a local pub feeling as you enter as this is where most of the drinkers congregate, which then gives way to a more chainy pub feel towards the rear with tables adorned with plastic food menus. Nothing really to shout about overall, but far better than the Brit next door.
