Update to the previous review: as of March 2007 all of the pews in the central crossing of the Cathedral have been removed, the floor restored and new chairs provided. The chairs are comfortable and the arrangement allows for much better visibility. Large-scale events including choral & orchestral concerts can be held quite easily thanks to the size and flexibility of the Cathedral.
CCMS, 23/08/07 Visibility is the main problem in the Cathedral. The total capacity is enormous (over 1,000 attended a recent service), but the chairs and pews facing different directions and are so interspersed with substantial screens and pillars most have no line of sight to most potential performing locations. Small- and medium-size events are often held in the North transept, where chairs can be arranged around a central area giving some semblance of a concert hall. Rehearsal time may be limited - this is a busy cathedral with a full complement of services. The organ is a 1970s Rieger, suitable for both solo and accompanimental use. Julz, 09/06/06
