Nice pub with a wide range of ales (though all Youngs, I think), board games and bar billiards. And you can get a bowl full of sausages! Sounds so obvious but I've never come across this before - why don't more places do sausage bowls??

The food here is rather decent. Large, wholesome and reasonably priced. The lamb burger (£5.95) goes very well with its aromatic minty sauce. The steak in the steak sandwich (£7.50 with chips) is cut up small, which is a nice touch, but is served between two such enormous doorsteps of bread (you can choose white or granary) that the meaty flavour struggles to assert itself.

The chips can be excellent, though I gather this depends on the moment you order them - if you're in luck, they're fat, golden-brown, succulent, crisp on the outside and juicy in the middle. If you miss the right batch they can be disappointingly soggy.

The salad coming with the steak sandwich and burger is basic (curly lettuce and cold tomatoes with a dressing) but pleasingly fresh - unlike the normal limp pub garnish, it's a pleasure to eat it. Our companions wished their ham, egg and chips ("hearty, very delicious, totally unhealthy") had come with some.

The beer is well-kept. Pity about Young's stolid offerings; redemption is achieved by the Tribute, which is super-drinkable. They have Bombay Sapphire gin as well as Gordon's, and a pleasing range of whiskies.

A sprawling interior (and nice garden area at the back) creates a feeling of more space than is usual in a crowded pub with such a traditional ambience. It's chock-full of solid wooden tables and most surfaces are just the least bit sticky, letting you know you're in a no-nonsense pub. The toilets are up a narrow flight of stairs and can be a bit of a mission if you've over-indulged. I've always found the service competent and friendly. It's one of the only two places I know (The Gardener's Arms in Plantation Road is the other) with a bar billiards table (more fun, for amateurs, than pool; £1/play; £5 deposit at the bar for cues). Definitely one of Oxford's better pubs.

When I ordered soft drinks and asked for no ice, the bar man gave me attitude about the fact that ice came with soft drinks. Again, I asked not to have it, as I consider that it takes up a lot of space (if the bar man fills the glass with it) and also dilutes the drink, and he told me that the Brewery "wants them to put a lot more ice in than he does".

Nice pub with well kept beer, but is a little pricey if you stray from the Young's real ales, Guinness £3:15, food is standard pub fare but not trying to be anything than it's not and is good for the money. On a warm evening really nice to sit out the front and watch the world go past.

Good Young's pub with loads of character however gets very busy meaning tables are sometimes sparse. A bar billiards table is a rare sight in Oxford and there are also loads of (rather tatty) board games to keep drinkers occuppied. Garden gets rammed in summer. Beware toilets at top of narrow steep stairs at front and you will find it very difficult to play on the quizy/fruity when garden busy as to play I had to block the garden entrance!

There's a sort of garden at the back - trestle tables and so on - which is lovely for summer drinking. It's always fairly full and offers some nice whiskies.
