Have recently visited The Chequers Inn as heard it was now under new management. As a local I used to enjoy visiting but over the last few years it had turned into a real dive. Was really surprised and pleased at the turnaround. The refurbishment looked fresh and not too modern and it had a real feel of a family pub. There is a large garden which is fully confined and safe for young children. Looking at the 'Whats On' board there seemed like there was a lot of entertainment to look forward to. Will definitely be visiting again.
Laura123 (Unverified), 11/02/09 Went back to The Chequers recently and found it open and newly refurbished. Obviously this is an improvement on before when it was all very tired and dull, but there still isn't too much to get excited about. There is quite a large garden at the rear for those rare warm days, with 2 Aunt Sally alleys taking up a good percentage of space at the back. The interior is still fairly bland with the usual array of fruit machines and a dartboard. The pool table that always lurked to the right of the front door has gone though. Prices seemed average for drinks. There is probabaly food but the only thing I had in this departmentt was some very good crisps (not Walkers). Something of a query I do have though is regarding the amazing number of seats there are inside. I can never envisage the day when even half of them get used. Do they offer something I don't know about? Is there a legendary pub quiz that fills the place up or it the home of the best darts team in the area? Who knows and frankly who cares as The Chequers is miles out of most people's way. Things are getting better though. Joe B (Unverified), 07/06/08 Appears to have either closed down or is currently under re-furb. Joe B (Unverified), 30/10/07 Been here ages ago when it was some sort of pool table chain pub and tried to visit again shortly before new year last year but found it to be closed! The lights were on, the door was open and there was even a couple playing pool but I was informed by a barwoman who only seemed to speak in words of one syllable that they were shut. I was not happy and I really can't be bothered to go back given this episode (which seems to be in keeping with the previous reviewer's experience). Joe B (Unverified), 14/03/07 A really nice lively pub at the weekend, only problem is they don't allow in non-British citizens. My Irish friend, and my Bermudian friend are not allowed to drink here as apparently their authentic driving licenses are not accepted because they are not British ones. Ok, yes the Bermudian driving license is quite unusual but Ireland? Come on! We even complained to the manager and his only response was "it's our policy". I did actually go there lastnight and enjoy it, as it is a good pub, but can't help being bitter about their rather un-pc approach to identification!
