The Harcourt Arms is possibly one of the best old-style, cool, soulful, arty, well kept pubs I've ever been to. The licencees are down to earth and hard working. I would recommend it to anyone that appreciates a beautiful, relaxed, welcoming space. WELL DONE HARCOURT ARMS!!!!!!!!! sel (Unverified), 12/04/12 Sad to see this once fabulous old pub gentrified. The snugs have gone and it's lost all of its old charm. This is part of the demise of old Jericho sadly. Old-styled English pubs are vanishing daily - painting them white and putting in soft furnishings and prioritising wine over beer hastens the end of the traditional English pub. :( Resident (Unverified), 30/03/12 I think it is a great place, individual and very friendly, the ales are kept very well and the charcuterie platter is very well priced and delicious. They have open mic there too which brings in an interesting crowd. ppbou (Unverified), 16/07/11 This was poor. The beer is too expensive and the wine is dull. Food on offer doesn't make sense. The courtyard opening does not make up for the other failings. howler (Unverified), 23/06/11 Just to update on the last (pretty old) review, the Harcourt is still an example of something that is actually quite hard to find these days: it's an old-fashioned no-frills pub that offers good, basic, cheap pub food (no over-priced gastropub pretentions here) as well as the usual range of beers, wines and spirits. Although the whole place has a pleasant patina of age, the landlord keeps it scrupulously clean, and the log fires are a real bonus. Best of all - if you have good (ie the same as my) - taste in music, are the sounds on the PA system. Loud enough to hear but soft enough to allow conversation, tunes range from Miles Davis and the giants of bop, to big bands and Latin jazz, by way of Cuban and tango. Absolutely no top forty, rock or pop. Let's hear it for the Harcourt! Roving Chester (DI User), 31/05/10 A great, no-gimmicks (apart from 2 open fires!) pub, which always has a wide clientele of all ages and types, and serves good, cheap basic food (baked spuds and toasted sandwiches), until late. PT (DI User), 24/11/08 My vote for the best pub in Oxford. The only place in Oxford where the landlord plays music to suit the taste of his customers. The ESB is the finest west of Chiswick.
